After Your Surgery

  • You must have a responsible adult to stay with you at the surgery center and drive you home after your surgery. You will need an adult  to stay with you for the first 24 hours.
  • Do not return to work, drive, or be 'out and about' until you check with your doctor.
  • Drink lots of water if your doctor says you can. Light meals such as soup and crackers, Jell-O, soda, and juice are recommended for the first day.
  • Walk. This will help your body get working again. Get help the first time you get up.
  • Don't make any plans after surgery. Go straight home and rest.
  • Follow-up appointments will be at your surgeon's office.
  • Smoking delays wound healing. This may be a good time to stop smoking.
  • Hand washing is the most important thing you and your caregivers can do to prevent infection.
  • You will receive a call within 48 hours by a center nurse to see how you are doing.
